Films in the Screen Archive South East collection feature every day life, work life, military life, leisure activities, travel abroad and sporting activities across the Twentieth Century. All of these films show the changing history of clothing and dress: for adults and children; those at work and on holiday; uniforms and fancy dress costumes; those in formal wear and in casual attire.
This theme includes a small selection of early films which illustrate various aspects of fashion and dress through the clothing worn by the people on film.
This theme was initially developed for the collaborative project 'Screen Search Fashion' which focussed on research into fashion history in the 1920s and 1930s. Therefore, films from this era form the majority of films selected to be part of the thematic collection.

[Glimpses of Pre-war Worthing and Everyday Folk]

This silent amateur film captures numerous street scenes in Worthing, in particular those which took place during the harsh winter of 1938. It also records 'Sparks and Son Builders and Contractors' working on various local buildings.
[Holiday in Switzerland]
A brief amateur film recording a holiday to Switzerland. The majority of the footage focuses on the outdoor markets in Bern - the cameraman pays particular attention to the women wearing traditional Swiss dresses.
With the Bentley in France and Switzerland
A film by architect Joseph Emberton of a holiday with his wife Kathleen. They travel to the French Alps and the Lausanne region of Switzerland, in their Bentley car. The couple enjoy swimming and relaxing in the holiday resorts and take in the mountain scenery.
A film by Joseph Emberton of a skiing holiday with his wife in St. Moritz. They travel by train and watch ice skating, including the European Figure Skating champions Cecilia Colledge and Megan Taylor at the Chanterella ice rink. The Emberton's take skiing lessons and Joseph Emberton injures his leg and is taken to hospital.

[Conference; Trip to Clothing Factory; Dunford Shop]
This film shows a business trip to a conference in Buxton, followed by a visit to a clothing factory "James Stewart and Son Ltd. Clothiers" with seamstresses working at benches and using steam presses. The next sequence shows a compilation that includes a steam train entering Brighton station, two men playing golf; snowy scenes of Brighton [near St. Peters Church]; the family shop in Brighton with the family posing as mannequins standing in the window.

A colour film with music and commentary, humorously but clearly explaining how to use items of clothing as floats for personal survival in water.
[The Dennis Factory and their Products]
A lengthy record of Dennis Bros. Ltd products. The film tours the company's Guildford factory, where it films the production line, as well as vintage and modern vehicles both at the factory and in usage on the city streets.

This colour film with music soundtrack shows highlights of the Battersea College Rag Week with celebrations, pranks and events around London. The film was recorded by Richard Tomes during his first year as a student. Highlights include events on the River Thames between Barnes and Battersea and then on to London Regent Street, Sloane Square, Knightsbridge and Trafalgar Square.
[Bill's Party; Garden Scenes; Farnborough Air Display]
This edited colour and black and white film opens with interior shots of a family gathering for Bonfire Night at their home in Laleham; including scenes of guests dancing and socialising together in the front room. The second part of the film shows a young toddler playing at home with a box and out in the garden with a hose. The final part shows a brief shot of aircraft during the Farnborough Air Show.
